Centennial, Colorado, is actively pursuing environmental sustainability through various initiatives, including electric vehicle adoption, energy efficiency, and ecological restoration.
Electric Vehicle Adoption
In 2020, Centennial developed its first Electric Vehicle (EV) Action Plan through Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program. The plan aims to increase the number of EVs in Centennial zip codes to 18,000 by 2030, up from a baseline of 2,000 in 2020. This goal aligns with Colorado’s target of 940,000 EVs by 2030. The city provides resources to assist residents, property owners, and businesses in transitioning to EVs and installing charging infrastructure.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades
Centennial has partnered with CEG Solutions to implement energy efficiency upgrades across key municipal facilities, including the Civic Center and Public Works Building. These improvements are projected to yield annual savings of $56,000 and reduce energy consumption by 2,934 MMBtu. The project encompasses infrastructure renewal that balances energy efficiency, renewable integration, and long-term reliability.
Ecological Restoration Efforts
The Cherry Creek Valley Ecological Park, a 75-acre open space in Centennial, has undergone significant restoration to address stream erosion and loss of vegetation caused by urbanization. Collaborating with multiple partners, the city has restored the stream corridor and expanded recreational and educational amenities in the park, enhancing its value as a natural resource for the community.
Community Engagement and Resources
Centennial encourages residents to participate in sustainability efforts through programs like the Adopt-A-Street initiative, which allows individuals and businesses to maintain specific roads and right-of-ways. Additionally, the city’s Clean & Green program offers resources on water and energy conservation, hazardous waste disposal, and environmentally friendly building practices.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, Centennial demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for current and future generations.
